Well, our Fourth of July Week in Boston turned out to be one we will remember forever! And not just because we celebrated in the city where our independence all began.
Our week started like this...
But soon turned into this...Poor Granty got so sick. He was totally not himself, slept for most of the day, and was very cuddly. While I felt horrible for him, I couldn't help but love that he would snuggle me all day. I was also glad that his sickness was at the beginning of the week, because I could not wait to enjoy the 4th of July festivities in Boston!
The one time he did smile that day was when a 4th of July package came from my parents... getting all of us even more excited!
Lucky for Christian, we had the hotel pool to get his energy out after a long day with a sick brother.
As you can imagine, we spent a lot of that sick day with the TV on in our tiny hotel room. Which turned out to be a good thing, because on every channel were Hurricane warnings! It was all over the news... this hurricane was coming, and it was going to ruin the holiday I had been so anxious for! (But I'll admit, it was pretty exciting). We had planned on going into Boston on Friday to watch the fireworks, but due to the weather, the fireworks were moved up a day. So, after a fun get together with friends at the pool, we headed over to hopefully catch some of the show.We were so glad to go with cousins to the fireworks, so they could show us the ropes (and of course to have some friends!) After parking, we walked, and walked, and walked... in search of the perfect viewing spot.
Finally, we thought we'd found it. We spread out all of our stuff and settled in, ready for the entertainment. All of a sudden, we heard fireworks going off...but could only see a glimmer through the trees! We rushed to where we could at least kind of see them and watched what we could. Of course the kids didn't care, they just loved running around in the grass, WAY passed their bedtime.
What we saw of the fireworks was fun, however they ended kind of abruptly, so we decided to head back before we hit all of the crowds and traffic.
Now, imagine this, four adults, four kids, blankets, strollers, bags, food, and lots of walking. Now imagine, a little lightening, some thunder... you with me? Now, imagine in a split second sheets and sheets of torrential rain, add some wind... and that's how we found ourselves.
It was pure pandemonium. People were running, and screaming, and trying to find shelter. This had to be it... HURRICANE ARTHUR!! ....At least that's what it felt like! We all picked up what we could and ran as fast as we could. At one point, I took my shoes off to avoid slipping. The kids were screaming. Terrified, to say the least. Finally, we saw a girl, filming it all from a building. We pounded on the window, and she let us in.
Once we were out of the rain, and had the kids calmed down, we were all able to smile about it, but it definitely took some convincing to get Christian back outside to get to the car.
The next morning was the 4th of July! Remember how excited I was?? yeah. It was still raining...Thanks for nothing Boston. I was SO bummed. Especially since all I could think about was how everyone at home was enjoying a good ole' HOT July 4th. I was pretty bitter. But, that wasn't going to stop us from getting all decked out in our red, white, and blue.
After a good long time of racking our brains about what would be fun to do on a rainy 4th, we ended up at the Science Museum (with all the rest of the Bostonians). Now for picture overload...
Can you spot the bumble bee?
Thankfully, we have made some good friends in our ward here, and thanks to them, I couldn't feel too sorry for myself that I was missing the fourth with family. They had us over for a BBQ (still in the rain), and we had so much fun celebrating with friends who have become our family away from home.My friend, Mickisha even did a mini photo shoot for us!
We were also lucky to have received some poppers a few days earlier, they were a perfect substitute for fireworks! (Thanks Mom and Dad!)
The next morning, we FINALLY got some good weather, so we set out to Boston to make up for lost time.
We had a great time visiting parts of the Freedom Trail. Such a great reminder that "Freedom isn't Free".
And, of course we spent some time chasing birds...

And just in case you thought we were full of crap... We're really here. After a full day of sight-seeing, we headed back to Framingham to Friendly's, a restaurant we'd been wanting to try. As evident by the pictures...it's didn't disappoint!
To finish the week strong, we made one last trip to our hotel swimming pool that night. I will always have a fond place in my heart for that swimming pool. It saved us on some long days, and it's where Christian became a fearless swimmer. It has been so fun to watch our boys enjoy it. C has come a long way in the water thanks to that pool.
Despite the ugly weather, and my disappointment, we actually ended up having a really fun week filled with memories we will definitely remember forever.
